20+ Genius Trunk Or Treat Ideas For Cars That Wow
There’s a rumor going around that a great trunk or treat setup needs a truck bed, a fog machine and a weekend of power tools. It just isn’t true, lol!
Some of the best trunks out there are a sedan, a bedsheet and one good idea.
This list is built for that. Every idea here works from a regular trunk, a hatchback or even a minivan with the seats down.
I scrolled through hundreds of pins pulling this together and kept only the ones that looked doable in an actual parking lot, not a Pinterest fantasy with a professional lighting rig.
So what makes a trunk stand out on the actual night? Usually it’s one strong theme, a couple of props that do the heavy lifting and something for the neighborhood kids to look at up close.
You don’t need to buy everything new either. Thrift stores, the dollar store and things already sitting in your garage cover most of what’s below.
Below are 20 themes, from spooky to sweet to downright silly. Pick the one that matches whatever costume box you already have lying around and go from there.
TRUNK OR TREAT THEMES
Enchanted Forest Trunk Display
We’re starting off strong with an enchanted forest setup. Honestly it might be the prettiest one on this whole list.
Battery-powered vine lights get wrapped around the open trunk lid while fake moss and mushrooms sit along the bumper. Add a few stuffed woodland animals peeking out and the whole thing reads as a fairy tale corner instead of a parking lot.
This is the these theme I’d copy first if I only had one weekend to prep.
Under The Sea Trunk
Blue plastic tablecloths taped across the trunk opening turn any car into an underwater scene in about ten minutes.
Hang paper fish and jellyfish from fishing line so they sway a little every time someone walks by. A string of blue string lights tucked behind the tablecloth gives it a glow that reads as ocean instead of just blue plastic.
Spooky Graveyard Car Trunk
Not every trunk needs to be cheerful. This graveyard one proves it.
Foam tombstones from the craft aisle line up along the bumper like a tiny cemetery.
Add some fog from a cheap fog machine and the effect is genuinely creepy. Are the little kids going to sprint past this one? Probably, haha!
Candy Land Trunk Theme
This candy land trunk is pure sugar rush energy and I love it for that reason alone.
Big paper lollipops on dowels get stuck into a foam base. Gumdrop shapes made from painted cardboard line the trunk edge like a path.
It’s colorful enough to spot from three cars away.
Pirate Ship Trunk Setup
Talk about commitment! This pirate ship setup wraps the entire trunk in brown paper and cardboard to look like the hull of a ship.
A skull flag on a dowel sticks up from the back seat. A treasure chest prop holds the actual candy.
Kids love digging through a chest more than reaching into a bowl, no shame in that.
Haunted Circus Trunk Idea
Striped fabric across the trunk opening instantly reads as a circus tent, which is the entire trick here.
Add a few creepy clown balloons and some string lights shaped similar to marquee bulbs and this haunted circus theme gets unsettling fast, in the best way. This one earned a spot on the list purely for how different it feels from the rest.
Glow In The Dark Trunk
Want a Halloween surprise that only shows up after dark? Glow paint and black lights make that happen.
Paint stars, skeletons or simple shapes on black poster board with glow paint, then run a black light off a portable battery pack. The trunk looks completely ordinary at dusk and then transforms once the sun actually sets.
Dinosaur Adventure Trunk Decor
Inflatable dinosaurs stacked in an open trunk are somehow both goofy and genuinely impressive.
Add some fake palm leaves and a cardboard volcano prop in the back and all of the thing turns into a prehistoric jungle scene. Not exactly spooky, but the dinosaur kids will lose their minds over it.
Witch Kitchen Car Trunk
A bubbling cauldron prop parked at the trunk opening does most of the work for this witch kitchen idea.
Dry ice in a bowl of water gives it that classic smoky bubble effect. A few glass jars labeled with silly potion names line the bumper.
Space Galaxy Trunk Theme
Black fabric with glow-in-the-dark star stickers turns a trunk into a mini galaxy without much effort at all.
Add some foil planets hanging from string and a string of twinkle lights for that deep space glow. It’s simple, but it photographs better than almost anything else on this list.
Jungle Safari Trunk Display
Green streamers taped along the trunk edges instantly become jungle vines, which is such an easy trick for the price.
Stuffed safari animals get tucked among the fake leaves. A pith helmet or two adds a little costume flair for whoever’s handing out candy.
It works especially well if you’ve already got stuffed animals sitting in a closet somewhere.
Superhero Squad Trunk Setup
Who doesn’t love a superhero squad, am I right? This one is basically an excuse to wear capes and call it decorating.
Comic book style backdrop paper covers the trunk interior while cardboard city buildings sit along the bumper. Whoever’s working the trunk gets to dress up too, which somehow makes the full night more fun for the grown-ups, lol!
Ghostbusters Inspired Trunk Idea
This Ghostbusters setup earns bonus points for anyone who can rig a proton pack out of a pool noodle and spray paint.
A cardboard Stay Puft Marshmallow Man stands guard near the bumper while green slime lights blink from inside the trunk. It’s a niche pick, but the parents who grew up on the movie will absolutely stop and stare.
Halloween Bakery Trunk Theme
Fake cupcakes, pretend pies and a striped awning made from painted cardboard turn this trunk into a tiny bakery storefront.
A chalkboard sign propped against the bumper listing silly spooky treat names adds a nice little detail without much extra work.
Monster Truck Trunk Display
Big googly eyes stuck onto the front bumper turn a regular car into a monster truck instantly. It’s honestly hilarious.
Add some jagged cardboard teeth around the grille and streamers that look similar to exhaust flames along the sides. This is the these pick that gets the loudest laugh from parents walking by.
Wizard Of Oz Trunk
Yellow brick road fabric leading up to the trunk sells this Wizard Of Oz theme before anyone even sees the decorations.
A stuffed scarecrow, a tin man made from painted boxes and some fake tornado fabric spinning from a fishing line finish it off. It’s a lot of moving pieces, but it’s also one of the more memorable setups out there.
Spider Web Trunk Decorations
Stretchy spider web material from the dollar store covers this trunk from bumper to back window in about fifteen minutes.
Plastic spiders of every size get tucked into the webbing at random. Some people go subtle with just a corner of web, others go full chaos. Honestly the chaos version is more fun.
Fall Harvest Trunk Setup
Hay bales, corn stalks and a few real pumpkins turn this trunk into a mini fall festival.
String lights in warm amber tones give it that golden hour glow even after dark. It’s less spooky and more cozy, which makes it a nice palate cleanser between the scarier trunks on the block.
Minecraft Themed Car Trunk
Cardboard boxes spray painted green and gray get stacked to look similar to blocky Minecraft terrain, which is a surprisingly easy build.
A creeper face painted on poster board leans against the bumper for the full effect. Every kid on the block seems to be into this game right now, so this trunk tends to draw a serious line.
Frozen Winter Wonderland Trunk
Last but definitely not least, this frozen winter wonderland trunk covers everything in white fabric, fake snow and icicle lights.
Cardboard cutouts of a castle and some snowflake decorations hanging from string finish the scene. It’s a nice cool-toned contrast if every other trunk on your street is going with orange and black.
