20 Windy Day Hairstyles With Cute Braids, Buns and Scarves

Looking for windy day hairstyles that aren’t just your usual ponytail? Little side braids, tucked-up buns and colorful scarves give you plenty to try.
These looks include fully gathered styles plus a few half-up ideas for when you still want some length showing.
You can keep things simple or go all out with braids. A few loose strands are part of several looks here, so don’t feel like everything has to be perfectly slick.
Just keep a couple of extra pins handy for the pieces you’d rather have out of your face.
Pretty hairstyles for breezy days
little braid and messy bun
We’re starting off strong with this cute messy bun and tiny side braid. I love how the narrow braid disappears into all those loose loops at the back.

If you want to try the same detail, add a small braid above your ear before gathering your hair. Pin up the hanging ends if you’d rather keep them off your neck.
scarf-tied low ponytail
How pretty is this scarf ponytail? The pale blue, black and white tails hang beside the straight hair, with the scarf wrapped around the base.
Try adding a patterned scarf over your usual hair tie. Leave the tails long like these if you want the accessory to really show.
two long dutch braids
If you are looking for a style that gathers your hair from the top all the way down, this one is for you. Two raised braids follow a center part and continue into long plaits down the back.
Keep the ends tied off for this simple finish.
baseball cap and loose braids
I love these loose blonde braids with the brown baseball cap. The plaits sit over both shoulders, with a few longer pieces left around the face.
For your own version, tuck those front pieces behind your ears if they’re getting in the way. You don’t have to make the braids tighter to change that little detail.
smooth swept-back bun
Don’t want to add braids or accessories? No problem!
Try this swept-back bun with smooth sides and a rounded knot high at the back. I especially love how simple it looks with the black sunglasses.

double bubble ponytails
How cute are these bubble ponytails? The rounded sections run down both sides, with small ties between them and loose ends at the bottom.
Try this instead of regular plaits when you want a different shape. Gently loosen each section between the ties to get that fuller bubble look.
twists and a low tuck
This low updo may just be one of my favorites here. I love the broad twists coming in from the sides and the loose tucked shape at the nape.
Keep a couple of fine face-framing pieces if you like this softer finish. For fewer loose strands, you could pin those back too.
tucked twist with a claw clip
If you’re looking for an updo without a big bun on top, go with this tucked twist. The curved brown claw clip sits vertically along the back, with the ends folded into the hairstyle.
That little clip is pretty enough on its own.

paisley bandana and waves
Want to leave your hair down? This pale paisley bandana is such a cute option.
It covers the crown while the long waves stay loose down the back.
The lengths can still blow around with this one. If you want them gathered too, try adding a low braid beneath the bandana.
relaxed braids and front pieces
These low braids are so pretty with the long curved pieces around the face. They have a looser look than the braids that start at the crown.
I’d leave the plaits relaxed like this. A small clip on each side would be a useful addition if you wanted to pull back the front pieces.
pom-pom beanie and a braid
How cute is this cream pom-pom beanie? One side of the hair is being braided here while the other still hangs in loose waves.
Use this as inspiration for a hat-and-braid combination. You could finish with two low braids or keep one side loose for the same uneven mix shown here.
double braids with little buns
I am obsessed with these braided buns. The chunky braids run down the back and end in two little loops instead of long tails.
This is a lovely option if you like double braids but want the lengths up. Leave the finish a little loose like this rather than aiming for two perfectly round buns.
half-up with spiky ends
Don’t want to put all your hair up? Try this half-up look with the top section pulled back and short ends sticking up at the crown.
The rest falls straight over the shoulders.

I love that slightly spiky finish. It gives you a different detail without adding a bow or scarf.
short half-up bow
This is such a pretty idea for shorter hair. The side sections meet at a small yellow-and-dark bow clip, with the ends flicking outward underneath.

Try a little bow rather than a large one if you want to keep this same look. You can still see the curved shape of the hair around it.
high curls and loose ringlets
If you are looking for lots of volume, then this one is for you. The curls are piled high with defined ringlets hanging on either side of the face.
I love all those loops at the top. For your version, gather the curls upward without trying to flatten that lovely shape.
side braid and rope twists
There’s more than one braid detail to love here. A tiny plait follows the side of the head into a ponytail, then the long tail is divided into rope-like twists.
Try this if you want something a little different from a single braided ponytail. The narrow side braid is the detail I’d definitely keep.
braided wrap at the nape
This is another gorgeous way to wear your hair up, but it’s a little different from the twisted style above. Chunky braids curve around the back and tuck into a low updo.
The loose spirals beside the neck are so pretty. You could tuck them away for a more gathered finish.
low bun with a scarf and hat
I love this low bun with the pink-and-olive patterned scarf. The long scarf tails hang below the bun while a pale wide-brim hat sits above it.
You could wear the bun and scarf without the hat on a gustier day. There’s already plenty of detail in that combination.
braids into a high curly updo
The height of this curly updo is gorgeous. Narrow braids travel back from the hairline into a full cluster of curls at the top.

Save this picture if you want a braided style with the lengths gathered up. I’d keep the curls as the main detail rather than adding a large accessory.
full braid down the back
Last but definitely not least, we have this beautiful single braid. I love the wide overlapping sections at the back of the head and the smaller plait toward the bottom.
Ask for a gently loosened finish if you want this fuller shape. The small tie and short loose tail keep the end simple.
