How to Elevate Your Work Outfits – My Favorite Workwear Tips

So you want to elevate your work outfits? Well, I think that makes total sense seeing as we spend SO much time at work, right? But here’s the thing – I’m talking about outfits you can actually wear to the office. Not those “seemingly cute” looks that you know deep down aren’t practical for an 8 or 9-hour shift. We’re keeping it real here!
In this guide, I’m breaking down my absolute favorite tips to help you elevate your work outfits this year.
Make sure you save this for later, and let’s get into it!
How to Elevate Your Work Outfits – My Favorite Workwear Tips
1. Shirts
This is honestly one of the most basic staples of work outfits, but hear me out – you don’t always have to wear shirts in the most obvious way!
Try layering a work shirt underneath a jumper to add some texture and intrigue to your outfit. I love pairing blue and gray tones together too – you can take a shirt you’d normally wear on the weekend and just pair it with smart trousers. Boom, instant elevation!
The classic crisp white shirt with straight-leg trousers? Still unbeatable. It looks so seamless and put-together.
My tip? Add some jewelry to step it up even more!
2. Blazers
Okay, whenever you add a structured blazer to any look, there’s just something magical that happens. It instantly elevates the outfit, makes it look more formal AND chic at the same time. You can even pair your blazers with a belt to give it a different feel – I love this trick!
Here’s something important though: make sure your blazers have some padding in the shoulders if you really want that structured, elegant look. A great quality blazer shouldn’t lose its shape – you should be able to hold it up on the hanger and see the structure it has on its own. That’s how you know it’s good quality!
3. Jumpers
Especially when it’s cold or when the office AC is doing that thing where nobody can agree on the temperature (you know what I’m talking about!), jumpers are your best friend. They’re a great way to regulate your own temperature while staying cozy, comfy, AND chic in the office.
You can go with striped looks, match your jumper color with your trousers, wear a chic turtleneck, or even layer it under a blazer. So many options!
4. Skirts
If you like wearing skirts, there are SO many different ways to incorporate them into your work outfits. They also give your blouses, shirts, and jumpers some nice variation.
That crisp white shirt we talked about earlier? Pair it with a non-fitted skirt and add some jewelry – it looks so elegant! Or try a slightly fitted (but still comfortable) skirt with a blouse. And don’t forget about matching blazer and skirt combos. A simple brooch can add that extra touch of elegance too!
5. Cardigans
I LOVE cardigans because they work as both layers AND tops if you know how to style them right. You can button them almost all the way up and wear them as a top on their own – it looks so elegant and chic! Or wear them as a traditional cardigan over a t-shirt or tank.
Two-tone outfits with different shades of brown and a buttoned-up cardigan? *Chef’s kiss*. Seriously, don’t underestimate your cardigans!
6. Silk
If you work in a more formal workplace, silk is THE way to bring that extra touch of elegance to your work outfits. There’s something about the contrast between silky or satiny materials and the cotton-type fabric of your trousers that just adds a beautiful flare of sophistication to the whole look.
7. Dresses
Okay, dresses can be such a lifesaver when you’re running late! They’re a really quick way to get ready – all you need to do is pair them with the right shoes, cardigan, or blazer.
Picture this: a structured blazer over a black dress with the right shoes. So simple, so elegant, but looks SO put-together! Or pair a dress with a long cardigan for those chillier days. Dress outfits are honestly one of the easiest ways to look effortless and polished at the same time.
And if you don’t like feeling too restricted? Try a flowy skirt paired with a belt, turtleneck, and boots. Perfect for winter, especially!
8. T-Shirts
Yes, the classic t-shirt! I love this one because you can actually incorporate elements from your more casual wardrobe – things you’d wear on weekends or after work – without wasting them.
You can make a casual t-shirt look more elegant and structured by adding a belt, pairing it with structured trousers, and keeping things in neutral tones (grays, browns, blacks). Add an elegant cardigan or knit on top, and you’ve pulled that casual look right into formal territory. Depending on your workplace dress code, of course!
9. Trousers
Trousers are your go-to comfort office look, and they’re obviously key to any wardrobe. You’ve got options here: straight-leg trousers are always a solid choice, wide-leg trousers (which you can pair with a belt), or cropped trousers for those warmer months when you don’t mind showing a bit of ankle.
Cropped trousers look particularly amazing with a cropped jacket too – I love that silhouette!
10. Coats
Super important for your commute! For most workplaces, you’ll want coats that are a bit more corporate – think neutral tones rather than bright pink or red (unless that fits your workplace vibe and personal style, of course!).
A Mac is great for fall and autumn (maybe not winter unless you layer up!). A jacket with wide lapels looks very chic and almost military-inspired. And the classic black coat? That’s going to be something you want in your wardrobe anyway because it just goes with SO many outfits.
11. Shoes
Let’s talk about three types of shoes for work:
Loafers: These can be paired with so many different outfits! Get them in different tones – lighter ones for neutral trousers, blacks for your navy or black trousers. They work in different weather too, which is a bonus.
Heeled boots: When you want to wear a heel to work but also need comfort for all-day wear, I love a lower heel boot. Much more comfortable than a tall heel! Square-toe options are great for extra comfort too.
Sleek trainers: If your workplace allows smart-casual, a stylish pair of trainers (Sambas are one of my favorites!) can work with quite sleek outfits while still providing comfort. Perfect if you’re at your laptop most of the day!
12. Accessories
This is where the magic happens! Accessories pull an outfit together and can take a level 6 or 7 outfit straight up to an 8 or 10 just by adding those finishing touches.
Obviously you need a good bag to carry your laptop and essentials, but then think about: an elegant watch, beautiful belts in different colors to match various outfits, and simple jewelry pieces. These are honestly the crème de la crème on top of your outfit!
